00 – The Team: Who’s Behind the Course

The Workshop is Organized by FAMAF-UNC, Fundación Vía Libre, and the Ministry of Education. Below are excerpts from the biographies of the team behind this project:
Marcos Gomez. A PhD in Computer Science and a professor at FAMAF. He has also taught in primary schools for 10 years, giving him a deep understanding of educators and content development. Marcos has developed educational content, teacher training courses, and curricular proposals to introduce topics like computer science, AI, and programming at all educational levels in collaboration with Fundación Sadosky. For this project, he joined Fundación Vía Libre to design the course.
“I think the first session will be crucial to introduce AI with a critical perspective to a group of teachers interested in this subject. My expectations for the course are high. With AI and language models gaining popularity, it’s essential to foster reflection on stereotypes and biases in their development. I believe this course will encourage teachers to reflect and apply these insights in their classrooms.”
Emilia Echeveste A PhD in Education Sciences and a professor with a degree in Psychology from the National University of Córdoba. She teaches courses on educational psychology and epistemology at UNC’s Faculty of Physical and Natural Sciences. Emilia is a postdoctoral CONICET researcher focusing on teaching and learning in basic sciences, particularly Computer Science, through a socio-anthropological lens.
“This training opportunity has significant impact on education, especially in Córdoba. It’s a timely topic that not only engages and interests students but also provides tools to critically examine current processes in schools. It directly relates to social dynamics, especially with what’s happening on social media and search engines.”
Guido Ivetta. A PhD candidate in Computer Science focusing on biases in language models, Guido collaborates with Fundación Vía Libre in research and teaches at FAMAF.
“My role is more technical. I aim to demystify the fear of understanding AI technologies. EDIA is an intuitive tool that students grasp quickly. This field captures student interest and is underrepresented in secondary education”.
Hernán Maina. A Computer Science graduate pursuing a PhD at UNC. As a CONICET fellow, he was instrumental in developing EDIA, the tool central to this workshop.
“I’ve always been fascinated by technological advancements, especially in robotics and image processing. Recently, with the rise of virtual assistants like ChatGPT, my curiosity about language models led me to join Fundación Vía Libre. I contributed significantly to EDIA’s original programming and aim to enhance its functionalities further.”
Nair Carolina Mazzeo. A communicator with Fundación Vía Libre and a graduate of the National University of Lanús. She specializes in political research and human rights.
“In a world increasingly shaped by AI, critically evaluating these tools is crucial for building a fairer society, starting in schools. My role in communication is to make technical and scientific concepts accessible to everyone.”
Beatriz Busaniche. A social communication graduate and activist, Beatriz is President of Fundación Vía Libre. She holds a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property from FLACSO and teaches at the University of Buenos Aires, Torcuato Di Tella University, and FLACSO.
“At Vía Libre, we always strive to think about technology as a tool for people and communities. This course aims to demystify AI and empower teachers to critically engage with this impactful technology.”
Laura Alonso Alemany . A linguist with over 25 years of experience in natural language processing, Laura specializes in making technical artifacts accessible.
“As someone from a non-technical background, I hope to guide participants to explore technical tools using their own skills and experiences. This workshop aims to uncover and critically assess discriminatory patterns reinforced by language processing technologies. I hope participants leave equipped with tools and methodologies to explore these biases and empower their students.”
Luciana Benotti. A researcher and professor specializing in natural language processing at FAMAF. With over 20 years in the field, she has studied in Argentina, France, and Italy, and has worked with Fundación Vía Libre for five years.
“It’s essential that everyone evaluates these technologies critically, understanding their limitations and integrating this knowledge into schools. These tools are becoming increasingly embedded in our daily lives. Promoting scientific dissemination and fostering dialogue between educational levels are crucial goals of this course.”
